In the name of Civilization

In the name of Civilization

People came and destroyed my Heritage and Nation

My people were thrown into stockades

Their villages destroyed after many raids

My children were sent to a missionary school

Don't speak your language was the main rule

They were removed from their homes

Sent far away to desolate places

Where they once lived there are no traces

Of a proud people who walked upright

Now subdued and oppressed always to flight

Their Ancient beliefs tyrannized to replace

New ones were dictated by an alien face

Voices unheard speaking but silent

Deaf ears and blind eyes that often became violent

My people's spirit could not be quenched

Though their lives were threatened and oftentimes lynched

By the alien strangers who held us in stay

They insisted we forget and live life their way

Unscrupulous deeds they did without hesitation

Without pity, remorse, or reservation

You ask who are you to be in this situation

I am the Spirit of the Cherokee Nation
